West Orange County Regional Chamber of Commerce "Business Helping Business In Buena Park, La Palma & Stanton" November 28, 2012 Allison MacFarlane, Chairwoman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Mail Stop O-16G4 Washington, DC 20555-0001
Dear Chairwoman MacFarlane:
On behalf of the West Orange County Regional Chamber of Commerce and our nearly 300 member organization, I am writing to support a fair and inclusive regulatory process restart plan and operation of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Unit 2.
The Chamber believes that Southern California Edison should be allowed to restart and operate SONGS as proposed in their Return-to service Action Plan if the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) determines they have sufficiently completed the compensatory and corrective actions requested on the March 27, 2012 Confirmatory Action Letter.
With growing electricity demand, businesses in California will need even more clean, reliable and efficient electricity to keep running without interruption day and night. The California economy is facing a tough, uphill climb out of the recession. It is no surprise that companies have been leaving California in search of lower costs,of doing business. Nuclear power is one of the lowest-cost producers of base load electricity and has a lower production cost than coal or natural gas which helps reduce the price of electricity.
Developing alfernatiye sourcesof energy to offset thel1'ss of power generated at SONGS may be necessary, but the Chamber is concerned that no source Will be abie" to put into place quickly enough to provide the immediate reliability that our businesses need during peak conditions.,
In addition, I personally attended the NRC's Public Meeting a the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, CA. on October 9, 2012 and myself and many of my colleagues were concerned with the lack of input the NRC sought from the impacted business community throughout the meeting. Turning our fragile recovery into strong economic growth requires affordable, reliable power to business and resident alike.
Therefore, we encourage the NRC to conduct a more inclusive process moving ahead and we look forward to participating.
