SONGS Meeting Summary 11-30-12.pdf
Dear Mary Woollen,
In one day from two sources I got information showing who the NRC really works for. (The Nuclear Industry) The Nuclear Industry pays most of the money that pays you, so I suppose I am foolish to be surprised.
The first source was an article in the Huffington Post written by Tom Seller.
http://www.huffinqtonpost.com/2012/12/04/nuclear-power-whistleblowers n 2232108.html It was a good article, and one more example that shows the NRC is a captive regulatory agency. Yes, the NRC has a few people that are focused on protecting the public, but most of you are just working for a government pension and are afraid to stand up and act in the public interest. Richard H. Perkins and Larry Criscione are true heroes and people of real courage and character. Now you can sit back and watch the NRC do everything they can to make life difficult for Richard and Larry, or you can also take a stand.
The second source showing who the NRC works for was the "Meeting Summary Letter" sent to Pete Dietrich (see attached). I was amazed how the author reduced the public sentiment for the entire meeting down to two sentences. You were at this meeting Mary. You were specifically sent to report back to Chairman Allison M. Macfarlane. That is what you told me on the phone. Can you honestly say the letter accurately summarizes the meeting? Do you think the concerned public that arrived after working all day, and paid to park were accurately represented in this letter? Many of the people who could not leave work early enough were turned away because the parking was not sufficient.
Must I remind you people had to wait to get back in the meeting after bathroom breaks because the facility was filled and access was being limited because fire safty capacity was exceeded.
What are you going to do Mary? What is Chairman Allison M. Macfarlane going to do? Will she have the courage to push hard on the lessons learned from Fukushima, or is she just going to save her neck instead of protecting the public? Will she be the first to close unsafe nuclear power plants or will she continue to roll the dice and gamble away the 9th largest economy in the world? Both Diablo Canyon and SONGS are in active seismic zones we now know exceed the specifications the plants were built to. They both should never have been built. SONGS should not be allowed to run with the safety, retaliation, license amendment avoidance, and now sabotage issues. You and other NRC staff need to stand with Richard H. Perkins and Larry Criscione against management and the industry captive commission.
Sincerely, Jeff Steinmetz 1

MEETING
SUMMARY
FOR PUBLIC MEETING WITH SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON
Dear Mr. Dietrich:
On October 9, 2012, NRC personnel met with representatives of Southern California Edison and other public stakeholders at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Hotel in Dana Point, CA. The meeting was held to present and discuss the NRC's current regulatory oversight status of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, as well as allow a forum in which interested stakeholders could discuss their perspectives on the future operations of the plant.
During the meeting, the NRC heard from a number of stakeholders who were in support of future operations of the facility. Views expressed by these stakeholders included: lack of a safety-significant problem at the plant, the safe operating history of the utility, and the state's need for the electrical power and jobs provided by the plant.
The NRC also heard from stakeholders who were generally in opposition to future operation of the facility. Views expressed by these stakeholders included: demand for a public hearing before future operations, insistence on a license amendment, high cost associated with repair or operation of the plant, lack of trust in the utility and/or the NRC, and various related environmental concerns.
The NRC's mission, by law, is to license and regulate the nation's civilian use of certain nuclear materials in order to ensure the adequate protection of public health and safety, promote the common defense and security, and to protect the environment. On October 4, 2012, the NRC staff received Southern California Edison's letter of response to the March 27, 2012, Confirmatory Action Letter. The NRC will not make a decision regarding future operation of SONGS Unit 2 until a thorough evaluation of this material has been completed. The NRC will independently determine whether or not the information, analysis and actions provided by Edison constitute a solid technical basis for the resumption of power operation.
The meeting was recorded and copies of the recorded video, as well as written transcripts of the meeting will be made available on the NRC's website at http://www.nrc.qov/info-finder/reactor/sonqs/tube-deqradation.html.
Southern California Edison In accordance with 10 CFR 2.390 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its enclosures will be available electronically for public inspection in the NRC's Public Document Room or from the Publicly Available Records (PARS) component of the NRC's Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS). ADAMS is accessible from the Public Electronic Reading Room page of the NRC's public web site at www.nrc.gov/readinq-rm/adams.html.
Sincerely, IRA!
