Subject:

Face reality before it is too late To Commissioners Macfarlane, Apostolakis, Ostendorff, Svinicki, Magwood:

We understand that you will be voting shortly on Edison's request to re-start the San Onofre nuclear facility in spite of its endless history of serious problems. I am writing to remind you of your primary responsibilities as commissioners of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Your primary responsibilitiesare to assure the safety of American nuclearfacilities and of American citizens, not to assure the profitabilityof nuclearfacilities.

It is clear that if you allow Edison to re-start San Onofre in even a limited way, the lives of more than 8-million Americans in southern California will be on the line for absolutely no good reason and without any assurance of safety whatsoever. It is also abundantly clear that we do not want or need this power or this risk. And it is clear that you -- and only you -- will be responsible ifthe most incredible and unnecessary disaster of all is the result. The time has long passed that you should have recognized and acted on your primary responsibilities before it is too late -- for us and for you!
