United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission November 12, 2012 C/O Annette L. Vietti-Cook Secretary of the Commission Mail Stop O-16G4 Washington, DC 20555-0001 Re: San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (S.O.N.G.S.)
Dear Commissioners:
I am sending this letter as a California resident, consumer, and ratepayer of energy. I am sending this correspondence as the Community Development Director for a California municipality charged with the responsibility of fostering my community's economic development and long term sustainability.
Neither my personal household nor the community that I serve can thrive without the benefit of cost effective, reliable, and uninterrupted energy source. I'll admit its not easy being a supporter of nuclear energy given the recent event in Japan. Many folks are asking, "Why do we have to mess with this nuclear stuff in the first place? Why do we have to risk these horrible accidents when other better technologies are available?" The answer is that there are no better energy alternatives available. If we are going to maintain our standard of living-or anything approximating it-and remain competitive in a global marketplace, we are going to have to master nuclear technology.
It will be impossible to meet the energy demands of a contemporary society without a reliable source of energy like nuclear power. Other countries have already acknowledged the insatiable need for energy. It is my understanding there are approximately 65 reactors under construction around the world, but none these new reactors are in the United States.
The United States became the world's predominant industrial power because our forebears were willing to take the risks and make the sacrifices necessary to develop new technologies-the steam engine, electricity, automobiles, airplanes, electronics, and space travel. If we are not willing to take this next set of risks to master clean energy, others will, and we will have to live with those consequences. I cannot imagine what that means to my household and those in the community that I serve. You have my endorsement to make proactive decisions that result in delivering residents and businesses of California with cost effective and reliable source of energy which includes the use of nuclear power. Thank you for your consideration.
Respectfully submitted, Douglas D. Dumhart Community Development Director, City of La Palma, 2010 to Present Redevelopment/Economic Development Manager, City of San Juan Capistrano, 1987-2010 18 Kingfisher Court, Trabuco Canyon, CA 92679
