San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Safety Concerns

Dear Chairman Macfarlane:

As the Mayor of Laguna Hills, a city of 31,000 located in South Orange County, I am writing to express. concern about the. Januapry 3,1,;_2012, event at SONGS during which a reactor Coolant, leak occurred. in.Unit-3: resulting in;-a -small radioactive: release..,: Subsequeqnt investigations by Southern California Edison.- (SCE),. Mitsubishi (Designer/Manufacturer) and the NRC have revealed. unexpected premature wear Jn multiple steam generator tubes in both Unit 2 and Unit 3.

The-City of Laguna Hills is located approximately 22 miles north of the -SONGS Facility.

The recent event at.SONGS and subsequent in.yestigative findings and conclusions have created cause for concern among local officials and area residents, and raised questions about the future operation of SONGS.

Recently, our City Manager, Police Chief, and I attended a meeting at SONGS with Southern California Edison (SCE) at which SCE officials briefed City representatives on the unexpected premature -wear in multiple steam generator tubes,in. Units 2 and 3, and the radiation leak from Unit 3 that prompted the shutdown of the plant. At the local-level, SCE has also been very transparent and forthcoming by providing up-to-date SONGS Fact Sheets/correspondence, including holding one-on-one elected official briefings on an ongoing basis. I sincerely appreciate the due diligence exercised by SCE and. NRC -officials to err on the.side of caution by shutting down both units. until such, time a determination can be made as to the cause of the.radioactive release, and what-may. have contributed to the premature wear in the steam generato.rtubes.-
