Programs Home Programs News Links Contact Us Web Site Search Programs Science Environmental Management Nuclear Fuel Supply National Security Supporting Activities Programs The Department of Energys Oak Ridge Reservation is home to a world-leading research and manufacturing park, with major federal programs in the areas of science, environmental management, energy efficiency, nuclear fuel supply, reindustrialization, and national security. The Oak Ridge Office oversees and manages these programs at three primary sites that include the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the East Tennessee Technology Park, and the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education.
In order for the Oak Ridge Office to achieve its missions, organizations provide support to program offices in a variety of areas. It is through all offices working together that accomplishments are realized to benefit both internal and external customers, both in Oak Ridge and at other sites supported by the Office of Sciences Integrated Support Center.

External > Programs > Science Home Programs News Links Contact Us Web Site Search Science Laboratory Performance Reports FY 2011 Evaluation Criteria for UT-Battelle ORNL Site Office Organization Chart FY 2011 Evaluation Criteria for ORAU Science Programs within ORO are performed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), and Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab). At ORNL, researchers focus on basic and applied research to advance the nation's energy resources, environmental quality, scientific knowledge, and contribute to science education and national economic competitiveness.
The Laboratory also performs work for non-DOE sponsors when such activities complement DOE missions and address important national or international issues. ORNL is operated by UT-Battelle LLC. ORISE is managed for DOE by the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, a not-for-profit consortium of 99 colleges and universities.
ORISE is a national leader in science education and research. Its focus is three core areas in support of DOE including: worker/public health and independent verification of environmental cleanup; weapons of mass destruction, national preparedness and emergency response; and science education, workforce development, and scientific review programs.
Jefferson Lab accelerates electrons for use as a probe to study the structure of matter. Jefferson Lab is operated by Jefferson Science Associates LLC. Additionally, Oak Ridge supports 10 Science laboratories and facilities at DOE sites throughout the United States.

Organization Chart The Oak Ridge Reservation is one of the U.S. Department of Energys (DOE) most unique and complex sites, encompassing three major campuses and 34,000 acres. Each campus performs a diverse and unique set of missions Links of Interest for the DOE, but all share a crucial need for environmental clean-up.
Our Environmental Management (EM) program is fulfilling this need by removing hazardous environmental contaminants and structures left behind from the Manhattan Project and Cold War-era operations. Through our EM program, Oak Ridge will continue eliminating environmental barriers that stand in the way of the sites growth in science, national security, reindustrialization, and next generation energy.
Every day, the EM organization works aggressively to accelerate the clean-up schedule for Oak Ridge, realizing that the continuation of vital site missions hinges on its progress.
East Tennessee Technology Park: Substantial clean-up continues to be accomplished at the former uranium enrichment complex. Contaminated facilities are being removed, while clean facilities are getting a second life by transitioning them to privately-owned businesses. Progress is occurring daily to transform the site into a self- sustaining, privately-owned industrial park.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory: EMs vision for the laboratory is to be a safe, thriving center for the nations most advanced energy research. To fulfill this vision, extensive cleanup of the central campus must be completed, and the inventory of U-233, a special nuclear material stored onsite, must be dispositioned. The central campus area is littered with hazardous and outdated facilities that hinder new development for the DOEs evolving missions. Recent work has addressed several key concerns, but much remains to be accomplished to pave the way for the Office of Science to modernize the site.
Y-12 National Security Complex: At Y-12, EM is working to drastically reduce the sites footprint and to address contamination in the soil and surface water resulting from decades of operations. We are working to ensure a brighter, safer future for the Y-12 National Security Complex so it can better perform its mission--
securing and protecting our nation.
Transuranic Waste Processing Facility: Through years of defense-related research, a great deal of transuranic material was generated and stored in Oak Ridge. In 2003, the TRU Waste Processing Facility was constructed to treat the many forms of waste found around the Oak Ridge Reservation. The EM program is steadily working to remove all transuranic waste from the state of Tennessee.

External > Programs > Nuclear Fuel Supply Home Programs News Links Contact Us Web Site Search Nuclear Fuel Supply Science Environmental Management Nuclear Fuel Supply National Security Supporting Activities Nuclear Fuel Supply The Nuclear Fuel Supply Office leads the implementation of a cooperative agreement between the Department of Energy and United States Enrichment Corporation (USEC).
This includes facilitating the deployment of new, cost-effective advanced enrichment technology in the United States, and ensuring the stability of existing domestic enrichment capabilities, including continued operation of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, until the new technology is deployed. USEC plans to build and operate a commercial American Centrifuge Plant in Portsmouth, Ohio, to enrich uranium for nuclear power and fuel technologies. DOE Oak Ridge Office administers the Lease Agreements between USEC and DOE, assures that Memorandums of Agreement exist and are executed between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and DOE to govern USEC activities and executes the DOE Regulatory Oversight Program for USEC activities prior to transition from DOE to NRC.
The office leads Oak Ridge's Reindustrialization efforts, which focus on accelerating cleanup of the East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP) by making underutilized facilities and equipment available for productive use by the commercial sector, and developing a private industrial complex at ETTP that is referred to as the Heritage Center. The Reindustrialization approach has been modified to focus on transferring ownership of land and facilities rather than leasing. Property transfers will result in nearly $70 million savings to DOE because the cost of building demolition will be the responsibility of the new owner.
In addition, once facilities are transferred, DOE mortgage costs are reduced, thereby making that money available for other cleanup activities. The mutual goal of the Reindustrialization Program and Environmental Management's Cleanup Program is to transition ETTP to be a self-sustaining industrial complex no longer reliant on Federal funding. The Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee (CROET) is DOE's partner in this endeavor and is responsible for the commercial development of the Heritage Center.

External > Programs > National Security Home Programs News Links Contact Us Web Site Search National Security National Security Science The National Security mission in Oak Ridge is carried out at the National Nuclear Security Environmental Management Administration's (NNSA) Y-12 National Security Complex, formerly known as the Oak Nuclear Fuel Supply Ridge Y-12 Plant. Programs at Y-12 include manufacturing and reworking nuclear weapon components, dismantling nuclear weapon components returned from the national arsenal, National Security serving as the nation's safe, secure storehouse of special nuclear materials, reducing the Supporting Activities global threat from terrorism and weapons of mass destruction, and providing the U.S. Navy with safe, militarily effective nuclear propulsion systems. Y-12 is operated by B&W Y-12 LLC. ORO provides a variety of services to the NNSA's Y-12 Site Office as part of a service agreement between the two organizations.

Reservation Management Home Programs News Links Contact Us Web Site Search Reservation Management Reservation Management Financial Service Center The ORR is home to three major facility complexes: the East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP), the National Nuclear Security Administrations (NNSAs) Y-12 National Security Complex, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory Reservation Management (ORNL). Also located in the city of Oak Ridge are the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) and the American Museum of Science and Energy (AMSE). ORO is responsible for programs at ETTP, ORISE, and ORNL. Security and Emergency Management The Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) is a unique and irreplaceable resource for the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) in addressing its technology and national science missions. DOEs Oak Ridge Office (ORO) is committed to protecting Partnerships & Program its land inventory to meet the requirements of existing and future DOE mission-related facilities and Development programs. Protection of the land, facilities, and environment is also necessary to ensure continuing benefits and economic growth for the region through enhanced DOE missions. Consequently, land use decision making represents Diversity Programs a crucial factor in ensuring the viability and availability of land necessary to meet DOEs needs.
The ORR, encompassing 33,699 acres of federally owned land and three DOE installations, is located in Roane and Anderson counties in East Tennessee, mostly within the corporate limits of the city of Oak Ridge (population 27,387 according to the 2000 census). The ORRs boundary lies in the southern and southwestern quadrants of the city limits.
