June 2012 Jill ZamEk San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace P.O. Box 3608 San Luis Obispo, CA 93403 jzk@charter.net Nuclear Regulatory Commissioners U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 To the Commissioners:

I am writing on behalf of the San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace, an all-volunteer, non-profit organization based in California, adjacent to Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant.

The group has been the legal intervenor since 1973 concerning construction, licensing, and operation of the Diablo Canyon facility.

In the aftermath of the disaster in Fukushima, opposition to the use of nuclear energy has grown. Enclosed are 405 signatures of people who are demanding that both California nuclear facilities - Diablo Canyon and San Onofre - be shut down immediately and permanently.

Problems with nuclear power abound: storage of nuclear waste, seismic hazards, emergency response, vulnerability to terrorism, and aging components.

Sincerely, Jill ZamEk Board Member, San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace

'CALIFORNIANS FOR SHUTDOWN OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS To the Nuclear Regulatory Commissioners:

As California ratepayers and residents, we watched with horror as nuclear reactors in !( )Melted down, contaminating soil, water, and food with radioactive materials and forcing tens of thousands of people to abandon their homes.

Our decades-old nuclear reactors at Diablo Canyon and San Onofre pose similar and unacceptable risks. For the following reasons, we demand that the two California plants be shut down immediately.

High level radioactive waste is stored onsite in pools unprotected by containment. It is densely packed, making it vulnerable to severe fire and catastrophic radiological release.

The Department of Homeland Security, the CIA, and the FBI have determined that nuclear facilities are targets of terrorists.

The Diablo Canyon and San Onofre nuclear facilities are particularly vulnerable targets of terrorism because they are located on exposed and unprotected portions of the California coast and are susceptible to airborne and waterborne assaults.

Both plants are located in seismically active zones. Current NRC regulation prohibits the construction of nuc!ear plants so close to major active erthquake faults.
