Dear Senator Feinstein:
On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your letter of May 17, 2012, seeking clarification regarding how the NRC will decide whether the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) is safe to restart. The SONGS reactors will not be restarted until the NRC has confirmed that the licensee has taken the necessary corrective actions and we are satisfied that the facility can be safely operated. Enclosed are responses to your specific inquiries.
