_ tnite *tatc~ enate WASHINGTON, DC 20510-0504 http://felnstein.senate.gov May 7, 2012 The Honorable Gregory Jaczko Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Chairman Jaczko:

I am writing to request that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) more frequently publish radiological monitoring data from commercial nuclear power plants. I am concerned that this information can sometimes be publically unavailable for more than a year. Public confidence in commercial nuclear power depends, in part, on strong safety regulations and timely access to information.

I am pleased that the NRC publishes annual radiological monitoring reports for every nuclear power plant in the United States. Because these reports cover each calendar year, it is my understanding that specific radiological information for the January 2012 steam generator tube leak at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) will not be published until about April 2013. Although Southern California Edison publically released some radiation information for the SONGS tube leak, it appears that complete details will not be available until next year.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could publish the SONGS radiological monitoring data for 2012 to date, as soon as possible. I also request that you pursue changes to NRC regulations to require more frequent publication of unplanned radioactive discharges, or justify why you believe the current annual reporting requirements are appropriate.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from you regarding this important request. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me in my Washington office.

Sincerely, anne Feinstein ih ) nited States Senator
