Staff comments/clarifications on the sample fire protection evaluations
- Gordon, The staff has finished reviewing the sample fire protection evaluations discussed in the meeting on February 2, 2012, and has come up with the following comments/clarifications. After you have had some time to look, I would suggest having a call to make sure you fully understand the staffs comments as well as any impact they may have on meeting a March 9th date for the next Fire Protection Report submittal. Thanks.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- 1. The new evaluations have removed discussion of plant trip initiators in the room. For each room, discuss plant trip initiators in the room. Describe the scenario that would have to occur for a fire to cause a plant trip, affect redundant trains of FSSD equipment or cables, or both.
- 2. Discuss the possibility of room-to-room fire spread, in particular for unrated fire barriers and for adjacent rooms that contain redundant safe shutdown equipment.
- 3. For all equipment determined not to be significant ignition sources, identify the basis documents, as references, that support this conclusion.
- 4. Clarification: Clarify the use of both: There is no FSSD equipment located in these rooms and however, these rooms do not contain both redundant shutdown paths. (Section 2.9.2.1; similar in 2.9.5.1)
These statements can be seen as potentially confusing.
- 5. Clarification: It appears, from Section 2.9.2.1 of the sample evaluations and Part VI of the FPR, that OMAs are currently performed based on the Analysis Volume the fire occurs in. Clarify how these new evaluations will affect how OMAs are performed. For example, will OMAs now be differentiated based on room the fire is in? Will procedures be changed?
