San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station 2011 Annual Turtle Incidental Take Report

REFERENCE:

National Marine Fisheries Service Biological Opinion for Sea Turtles Dated 9/18/06

Dear Ms. Wilkin:

In accordance with the reference above, the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) is submitting this annual report on incidental takes of sea turtles for the year 2011. One Green Sea Turtle was entrained during 2011 at SONGS (see attached stranding report). The turtle had skin samples taken and tags injected by National Marine Fisheries Service, then released alive and unharmed at the San Onofre State Beach. Visual inspections on the previous shift 8/30/11, showed no evidence of turtles in the circulating water systems of the applicable unit. Routine monthly offshore surveys conducted offshore of SONGS in the vicinity of the Units 2 and 3 intakes did not note any sea turtles in the vicinity of the plant intakes. Both plants currently have velocity caps which significantly minimize the potential for the entrainment of sea turtles into the Units 2 and 3 circulating water intakes. SONGS also performs visual inspections of the circulating water intakes every shift for turtles and marine mammals. If you have any questions, please contact me at (949) 368-3816.

Sincerely,

'Rbet eckler Manager, Environmental Protection San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station P.O. Box 128 San Clemente, CA 92672
