The design of an NPP is based on postulated ground motion acceleration (Safe Shutdown Earthquake ground motion), which captures both maximum earthquake magnitude and the distance from the epicenter to the site. It is not a simple correlation between ground acceleration and earthquake magnitude (Richter scale).

- Tim, Can anyone tell me if this information being reported by DowJones is correct?
The rock part of the site is built to withstand 0.12g--equivalent to a magnitude-5.9 quake. The soil part of the site, meanwhile, is built to withstand 0.1 8g--or a magnitude-6.2 quake.
