Dear Mr. Allen:
By letter to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated December 17,2010 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML103610313), FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company, submitted a report of the steam generator tube inspections performed pursuant to TS 5.5.8, "Steam Generator (SG) Program."
The NRC staff is reviewing your submittal and has determined that additional information is required to complete the review. The specific information requested is addressed in the enclosure to this letter. During a discussion with your staff on April 15, 2011, it was agreed that you would provide a response within 45 days from the date of this letter.
The NRC staff considers that timely responses to requests for additional information help ensure sufficient time is available for staff review and contribute toward the NRC's goal of efficient and effective use of staff resources. If circumstances result in the need to revise the requested response date, please contact me at (301) 415-3867.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (RAI)
DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION. UNIT NO.1 DOCKET NO. 50-346 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has reviewed the submittal dated December 17. 2010 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS)
Accession No. ML103610313), where FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company submitted a report of the steam generator tube inspections performed pursuant to TS 5.5.8, "Steam Generator (SG) Program."
The NRC staff has determined that the following information is needed in order to complete its review:
- 1. Please discuss the results of your auxiliary feedwater header to tube gap analysis, including both visual and eddy current examinations performed on the internal auxiliary feedwater header, header-to-shroud attachment welds, and the external header thermal sleeves.
- 2. There appears to be an increase in the number of crack-like indications identified in 2010 when compared to 2008. Please discuss whether the severity of the indications found has been increasing with time.
- 3. Two tubes (one in each SG) were identified with volumetric indications inside the pressure boundary. The volumetric indication in SG 2A is located within the tubesheet and the volumetric indication in SG 1 B is located in the frees pan. The table in Section 5 of the December 17, 2010, submittal, however, shows one tube in SG 2A was plugged for a freespan volumetric indication. Is this correct? If so. please discuss how the freespan volumetric indication in SG 1 B was dispositioned.
- 4. Please provide a copy of a tubesheet map depicting the row and tube numbering scheme.
