SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT RELATED TO THE LICENSE RENEWAL OF SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2
Dear Mr. Joyce:
By letter dated August 18, 2009, Public Service Enterprise Group Nuclear, LLC, submitted, for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) review, an application to renew the Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1 and 2 (Salem), operating license for an additional 20 years. The license renewal application (LRA) was submitted pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 54, "Requirements for Renewal of Operating Licenses for Nuclear Power Plants." The staff determined that the LRA was complete and acceptable for docketing on October 15, 2009.
Since that time, the staff has reviewed the Salem LRA, performed site audits and inspections, issued requests for additional information (RAls), reviewed the applicant's responses to the staff's RAls, developed a safety evaluation report (SER) with open items dated November 4, 2010, and reviewed the applicant's comments on the SER with open items. The SER with open items was discussed at an Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) subcommittee meeting on December 1, 2010. On the basis of this review, the staff has developed the enclosed SER to document its findings associated with the safety review of the LRA and supporting documentation for Salem.
This SER is scheduled to be discussed at the ACRS full committee meeting on May 12, 2011.
