- Eric, Recently an issue came up regarding a leaking buried pipe at Indian Point with affected our review of its license renewal application. The licensee for Indian Point talked about using guided wave UT also.
In a phone call with Region I recently, I think that Harold Gray or someone in Region I said that the guided wave UT was not effective at Oyster Creek. the UT did not identified the cracked location in the buried pipe because the crack was located at a pipe support and the pipe support masked the crack (or something to that effect).
Carol Nove in my branch studied guided wave UT as part of her review of Indian Point issue. If I remember correctly Carol said that if the guided wave is qualified, it can be useful. Carol is not in the office today so that I cannot verify the issue on the guided wave UT with her.
Keith-Hoffman has the lead on buried pipe in my branch. He is in the office today. his phone # is 301-415-1294. He told me that the guided wave technology has not been qualified or demonstrated. EPRI is doing a mockup to demonstrate the methodology. Please call Keith Hoffman on the latest development on the guided wave technology.

- John, Yes, this is definitely safety related piping.
I talked with the residents and it sounds like Oconee has changed course a bit. They've made contact with GE and Structural Integrity to do some inspections of the pipe. Right now, their plan is to do a guided wave exam to perform the flaw characterization. From what I understand of guided wave, it's a fairly new technology. I'm assuming they'd try to use that data for the GL 90-05 evaluation. Guided wave isn't acknowledged by the Code as a volumetric technique, so I'm assuming we'd reject that idea. I'd appreciate any thoughts you've got on the topic.
