OF TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL HELD ON OCTOBER 14, 2010, BETWEEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AND PSEG NUCLEAR, LLC, CONCERNING QUESTIONS PERTAINING TO THE SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of PSEG Nuclear, LLC (the applicant), and Exelon held a telephone conference call on October 14,2010, to discuss and clarify the staff's questions concerning the Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1 and 2, license renewal application. The telephone conference call was useful in clarifying the intent of the staffs questions. provides a listing of the participants and Enclosure 2 contains a brief summary of the discussion and status of the items.
The applicant had an opportunity to comment on this summary.

SUMMARY
OF MEETING ON QUESTIONS ON THE SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION. UNITS 1 AND 2 LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION October 14. 2010 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of PSEG Nuclear, LLC held a telephone conference call on October 14,2010, to discuss and clarify the applicant's responses to NRC's request for additional information (RAI) related to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME Code)Section XI, IWE Inspection, and the Structures Monitoring Programs.
Discussion on Response to RAI B.2.1.28-4 and RAI B.2.1.33-07 During the conference call, the NRC explained their two concerns with the applicant's response to the RAls concerning the applicant's ASME Code Section IX, IWE Program, and the Structures Monitoring Program:
In its response dated September 1, 2010, the applicant stated that liner plate examinations at 57 randomly selected locations, are planned to be implemented by August 2016 for both Salem units. In its response, the applicant stated that it had not finalized its plans, but expects to conduct these inspections over multiple outages with approximately equal number of locations being sampled each outage. The staff was concerned about the lack of consistency between the RAI response and the commitment concerning the schedule for performing the liner plate inspections at 57 locations. The applicant's commitment stated it would complete random inspection of the liner plate for Salem Units 1 and 2 by August 2016 and April 2020, respectively. The staff is concerned that corrosion in the inaccessible portions of the liners could remain undetected for a long period. The staff requested that the schedule for completing the inspections in the License Renewal Commitments be revised to make it consistent with the response in RAI B.2.1.28-4.
- The staff believes the applicant has appropriate programs in place to manage possible degradation of the spent fuel pool, if the leakage is contained completely within the leak chase channels. However, the staff does not understand how the applicant has concluded that the leakage is contained within the leak chase channels.
