Response To Question Concerning Pilgrim Security Officer Importance: High
Dear Mary,
I am writing in response to your October 14, 2010 email to Mr. Bill Dean, Region I Administrator. As I discussed with you on the phone on October 29, Mr. Dean forwarded me your email for follow-up and resolution. Your email expressed concern regarding the morale of security guards at Pilgrim Station, as reported in a Wicked Local Plymouth news article on October 10. The article included statements by Mr. Jonathan Brain, President of United Government Security Officers of America (UGSOA), Local 25, that indicated that Pilgrim management had refused to address problems regarding a chilled work environment, general quality of life concerns, and safety, harassment, and intimidation of employees.
In response to the article, I spoke to Mr. Brain in person last week, to ensure a detailed understanding of his concerns. We have completed our review and, at this time, the NRC does not have any concerns regarding the Pilgrim security teams work environment. As you are aware, the NRC has two full-time resident inspectors at Pilgrim who perform continuous observations and assessments of the site work environment. These inspectors will continue to verify that employees feel free to raise safety concerns, and ensure that Entergy promptly addresses any issues identified as part of our ongoing assessment. Additionally, the NRC performs a focused review of licensee work environment as part of the biennial Problem Identification and Resolution (PI&R) inspection. The next Pilgrim PI&R inspection is scheduled for February 2011. The report will be publicly available in May 2011.
If you have any further questions, please contact me at (610) 337-5306.
Very Respectfully, Don Jackson Chief-Projects Branch 5 Region I-DRP (610) 337-5306
