Containment Building Separation Supervisor Talking Points October 7, 2009
Background
As part of the steam generator replacement project, we are cutting a 23' x 23' hole into our containment building to remove our two original steam generators and install our two new ones. The opening has been accomplished using hydro lasing techniques previously utilized at a number of other nuclear facilities Key messages o
In the course of removing the concrete, we discovered a separation in the concrete near the periphery of the structure.
Based on experiences at other facilities we were prepared to evaluate anomalies that might be revealed during the hydro-demolition.
o This separation presents no safety concerns for our employees or the public at this time.
o The containment is required to pass routine inspections and tests, which have always demonstrated its ability to meet design requirements.
o Our engineering personnel in coordination with containment structure experts from Sergeant & Lundy, MPR and Bechtel are assessing the condition to determine if the condition warrants any repairs prior to returning the unit to service.
o The reactor building is a cylindrical structure, comprised of a 3/8 inch steel liner surrounded by 42 inches of steel reinforced concrete. Within the concrete wall are steel tendons, which wrap around the building to provide strength. The separation is near the periphery of the structure.
