RE: Information Request Thank you for your enquiry.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is not comprehensive source and, in some cases, not a source at all for some of the information that you seek. Since the Duane Arnold Energy Center (DAEC) received its construction permit in June, 1970, and its Operating License in February, 1974 (Source: NUREG-1350, 2009-2010 Information Digest), some of the cost categories for which you seek information date from the mid-1960s, which makes it difficult to assess the comparable values of costs over a span of years and in circumstances when some of those costs are annual and others are for multiple year periods.

That said, I recommend contact with the following sources for information:

1. Nuclear Engineering Institute (NEI is a source for industry-wide and plant specific information, and collaborative efforts involving plant activities and regulatory evolution -

www.nei.org - 202-739-8000 in Wash, DC)

2. American Nuclear Society (ANS is the technical society for nuclear engineering -

www.ans.org - 800-323-3044 in IL)

3. Nextera Energy Resources - www.nexteraenergyresources.com - 561-891-7171 in FL (NextEra was formerly FPL. NextEra operates a fleet of nuclear power plants. NextEra Energy Duane Arnold, LLC is the licensee for DAEC. Other sites in the fleet include:

Seabrook, Pt. Beach, Turkey Point, and St. Lucie. NextEra would be helpful in understanding the structure of the costs that you seek and if they are allocated among fleet assets. They would be helpful with insurance issues.)

4. Linn County, IA - www.linncounty.org - 319-892-5000 - main number to Board of Supervisors. (Linn County would be the primary county regarding property taxes and might be able to refer you to other jurisdictions deriving tax revenue from DAEC related activities, assets or properties. Regarding your reference to subsidies as a cost. Linn County might be, or know of, recipient(s) of DAEC contributions for road maintenance, construction, police or fire protection, emergency planning and response, etc)

Best wishes for a productive research effort.

Dear K. Feintuch,

My name is Nishtha Ghosh and I am a research assistant at Cornell University's School of Applied Economics and Management conducting an economic analysis on the efficiency of energy production in the United States. Currently, I am conducting preliminary research on the fixed costs involved in operating various power plants- particularly, property taxes, subsidies, insurance, and capital costs. I was wondering if you could provide me with some information and figures about the fixed costs of Duane Arnold? I would very much appreciate your help!

Sincerely, Nishtha E-mail Properties Mail Envelope Properties ()
