By letter dated December 21, 2009, Arizona Public Service Company (APS) submitted a request for relief from the requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, for the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (PVNGS), Unit 3. In this relief request, RR No. 47, APS has requested relief from certain requirements for the Unit 3 second 10-Year inservice inspection interval that APS has determined to be impractical for Class 1 weld and component volumetric examinations of the reactor vessel outlet nozzles. The proposed alternative is to perform the required exams to the extent practical.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has reviewed RR No. 47 and has determined that the information specified in the attached draft Request for Additional Information (RAI) is needed for the staff to complete its evaluation. In order for the staff to complete its review in a timely manner, we request that you submit your response to the enclosed RAI by June 18, 2010. Please contact me if APS would like to have a conference call to discuss the draft RAI.
