Dear Dr. Schultes:
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) received your letter dated April 19, 2010. I wish to express my appreciation for your letter, in which you raised concerns regarding the license renewal review for the Duane Arnold Energy Center.
We have reviewed your concerns and your four corresponding questions. A part of the NRCs license renewal process is collecting and responding to environmental concerns as we evaluate an applicants request to extend the operating license. Two public meetings were held in Hiawatha, Iowa on April 22, 2009, to seek public comments regarding the scope of the draft supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS). The completed draft SEIS was issued for public review and comment on February 19, 2010. The NRC held two public meetings on March 31, 2010, in Hiawatha, Iowa, to solicit comments on the draft SEIS.
The enclosure to this letter provides staff responses to the four concerns that you raised in your letter. The NRC will also include your comments and NRC responses to your comments in the final SEIS for the Duane Arnold license renewal review, Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants, Regarding the Duane Arnold Energy Center (NUREG-1437, Supplement 42). The final SEIS is currently scheduled to be issued on October 15, 2010. We will mail you a copy of the final SEIS.
