ASSESSMENT FOLLOW-UP LETTER - MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION
Dear Mr. Repko:
On April 1, 2010, the NRC staff completed, as part of our quarterly review, an update of our assessment of McGuire Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2. The assessment evaluated performance indicators (PIs) and inspection results. The purpose of this letter is to inform you of your safety performance during this period and our plans for a future inspection at your facility. This letter supplements, but does not supersede, our annual assessment letter issued on March 3, 2010.
On October 27, 2008, the NRC staff forwarded a letter concerning the final significance determination of a third quarter 2008 Mitigating Systems Cornerstone finding of low to moderate safety significance (White). The third quarter White finding involved a failure to take adequate corrective action related to implementation of a safety-related nuclear service water (RN) strainer backwash system. As a result of this finding, the NRC assessed your performance of McGuire Units 1 and 2 as being in the Regulatory Response column of the NRCs Action Matrix.
On January 11, 2010, we were notified by your staff of your readiness for the NRC to conduct a supplemental inspection to review the actions taken to address the White finding. On March 9, 2010, we completed supplemental inspection 95001. This inspection procedure was conducted to provide assurance that the root causes and contributing causes of risk significant performance issues were understood, the extent of condition was identified, and the corrective actions were sufficient to prevent recurrence. As a result of the satisfactory completion of this inspection, we have assessed McGuire Units 1 and 2 performance to be in the Licensee Response column of the NRC=s Action Matrix.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.390 of the NRC=s ARules of Practice,@ a copy of this letter will be made available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the Publicly Available Records (PARS) component of NRC's document system (ADAMS).
