RE: Interesting Issue and Picture attached - fyi - Stu
- Marvin, Thanks for responding to the questions. I believe Goutam Bagchi may be assigned as the lead on this issue for NRO. Mike Case RES/DE/DIR sent me the photographs and had a few questions.
I and Hans Ashar, now working in Licensing Renewal Branch of NRR, have worked on RGs 1.135 & 1.90 that address inservice inspection of prestress containments for many years. We have also been tracking degradation issues and other problems with prestress containments and have an interest in what's happening at CR-3.

RE: Interesting Issue and Picture attached - fyi - Stu
- Herman, The crack was discovered during hydro-demolition of containment wall for steam generator replacement activities. The 26 feet x 26 feet opening in the photo is approximately 60 feet above grade and centered between two of six vertical buttresses (post-tensioning system).
Although we are still gathering info, there is a possibility that the crack(s) may run 360 degrees and extend the full height of the structure. Licensee is performaing analyses to determine 1 ) if outer portion of building has sufficient strength to support the steam generator lift system and 2) whether containment structure satisfies design requirements and remains fully operable.
Herman - Are you the NRC technical expert in this area?

FW: Interesting Issue and Picture attached - fyi -Stu Hello Marvin, I was sent a picturE; of a crack in the C;:ystal River-3 ccntainment wall. I could not determine exactly where the crack is located and wanted to ask you a few questions:
- 1. Is the crack that is shown in the picture near a tendon buttress [if so which buttress?] and 2. what elevation above the ground i.; the crack located?
Thanks for help,
<<Herman>>

Interesting Issue and Picture attached - fyi - Stu 6.) Crystal River TCrack on Exterior Containment Wall 9 Picture 032.ipg Hydro-demolition of the RB opening was restarted on Friday morning. Licensee reports hydro-demolition is nearing the liner plate. Licensee is investigating a vertical crack (1/2" wide, about 18" deep) found in the area of hydro-demolition that extends outside the area being worked as evidenced by water leaking through the crack and coming out an area that is outside the hydro-demolition work area. A root cause investigation is in progress. Sargent and Lundy is involved with the investigation and corrective actions. This issue will be turned over to the Steam Generator Replacement (SGR) inspection team (led by R.Chou) who will be on-site today.
