.3 DAILY STAFF NOTES REGION I April 24, 2009 (Update) On April 17, Exelon informed Region I of the discovery of tritium contamination in a monitoring well at Oyster Creek near the Condensate Storage Tank (CST). On April 18, Exelon identified additional tritium in a trench excavated to examine the material condition of several pipes that connect with the CST. Since initial identification, Exelon has installed two additional monitoring wells near the Condensate Transfer Building and the CST. Tritium samples collected from these wells on April 21 and 22, respectively, indicated between 5 and 6 million pCi/l. Based on its ongoing investigation, Exelon has identified several potential sources of the tritium, including the CST. Exelon is conducting testing to locate and repair the source(s). Other than the three wells, Exelon has not seen radioactivity in other well samples or in discharge canal samples above minimum detectable activity. Notwithstanding, Exelon is developing mass flow estimates of ground water to conduct bounding offsite dose calculations. A Region I specialist inspector and the site resident staff continue to closely follow licensee activities. Exelon has been updating the State of New Jersey.
