PUMA TEST MATRIX REACTOR AND PLANT SYSTEMS BRANCH DIVISION OF SYSTEMS RESEARCH OFFICE OF NUCLEAR REGULATORY RESEARCH ACRS SUBCOMMITTEE ON THERMAL HYDRAULICS PHENOMENA AUGUST 26, 1994 ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND

PUMA TEST MATRIX CURRENT PLANNING CALLS FOR UP TO 40 TESTS TO BE PERFORMED IN THREE PHASES A BROAD SPECTRUM OF SBWR LOCAS AND TRANSIENTS WILL BE SELECTED BASED UPON:

COUNTERPART TESTS TO GIST, GIRAFFE, PANDA SENSITIVITY STUDY TESTS, BEYOND-DBA TESTS, SYSTEM INTERACTION TESTS TO MEET NRR NEEDS SBWR PIRT RESULTS REVIEW OF TEST RESULTS TEST MATRIX MAY CHANGE AS NEW INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE (E.G., REVIEW OF TEST RESULTS, FUTURE NRR NEEDS, PIRT RESULTS, ETC.)

  • Test will be terminated when a temperature or pressure setpoint is reached to prevent damage.

In addition to Tests 1 - 15, a few repeatability tests will be performed.

VB = vacuum breaker between drywell and wetwell, EQUAL

= equalization line connecting suppression pool to the vessel (e.g., 3 means all three equalization lines will open if actuated automatically or manually),

DWS =

drywell

spray, WWS = wetwell
spray, RPV INJ. = water injection to RPV via CRDS or RWCUjSDCS, MSLB

= main steam line break, BDLB = bottom drain line

break, GDLB

= GDCS line

break, LOFW = loss of feedwater, FWLB = feedwater line break, ICRLB

= isolation condenser condensate return line break.

No information is currently available regarding the number of operational components in the PANDA tests.

  • In Test 3, the more severe LOCA of BDLB and GDLB will be selected for testing pending results of Phase 1 tests (in terms of RPV water level and containment pressure).

Tests 4 - 9 will have the same LOCA as Test 3.

Should GDLB be selected for Tests 3-9, operational components will be adjusted accordingly.

Test 8 will be deleted if continuous rise in containment pressure and temperature is observed in Test 6.

In addition, several sensitivity tests will be performed by varying initial

pressure, initial water level, initi~l non-condensable concentration in
drywell, or important phenomena identified in PIRTs (e.g., core power).

  • Operation components will be modified to account for single failure of an active component (e.g., a GDCS line, DPV, VB, equalization line) based on Phase 2 test results.
