Dear Commissioner Jaczko,
I write today to request a change of venue for an NRC meeting scheduled for June 15, 2009. This session was scheduled at the request of Entergy to discuss their proposal for moving the Unit 3 spent fuel to the Unit 2 pool in temporary casks. Their proposal as I understand it, has them then.
transferring the fuel to permanent casks for transfer to the on site storage pad. Westchester County has many concerns about this plan.
I understand one reason to hold this meeting in Maryland is the number of NRC staff that will be involved in discussions with the licensee. It is my belief there are many local stakeholders and interested parties who will be deterred from attending the meeting due to the distance and expense associated with traveling to hear the discussions. This is particularly 'difficult in the current economic conditions and limits placed on household and local government budgets alike. The proposed location could easily be labeled by critics of Entergy, the NRC and the entire industry, as being selected to keep public access to a minimum. This, I am sure is something the NRC would hope to avoid.
The NRC has historically held meetings in Peekskill or White Plains. In the interest of transparency and convenience, I want to formally request that you move this meeting to a location in Westchester. If it is a public meeting, why not make it easily accessible to the public that will be impacted by the Commissions decisions concerning the licensee's request?
