QUESTIONS FROM NRC REVIEWERS OF UNIT 2 RELIEF REQUEST NO. 38

1.

Noting the coverage limitations, the staff would like to know if there were any recordable indications found during the inspections of the welds included in Relief Request No. RR-38?

Part A, Examination Category B-A, Item B1.22, Pressure Retaining Welds in Reactor Vessel The weld examinations have not reported recordable indications.

Part B, Examination Category B-D, Item B3.110, Full Penetration Welded Nozzles in Vessels The weld examinations have not reported recordable indications Part CI Examination Category B-H, Item B8.20 1 Integral Attachments for Vessels The pressurizer skirt weld has a mid wall construction slag inclusion. The slag was detected ultrasonically during interval one and evaluated to be acceptable for continued operation. The slag was re-examined in intervals one and two and has not changed in size.

Part D, Examination Category B-J, Items B9.11TPressure Retaining Welds in Piping The welds with coverage limitations have no flaw indications. Several welds do however have ultrasonic geometrical indications caused by ID or OD surface conditions.

Part E, Examination Category C-C, Items C3.20 and C3.30, Integral Attachments for Vessels, Piping, Pumps and Valves Item C-C C3.20 Piping - Integrally Welded Attachments The weld examinations have reported no recordable indications Item C-C C3.30 Pump - Integrally Welded Attachments The pump lugs welds do not have any rejectable dye penetrant indications. The lug welds do have acceptable recordable indications caused by surface conditions (rough as welded surface condition).

Part F, Examination Category C-F-l, Items C5.11 and Item C5.21, Pressure Retaining Welds in Austenitic Stainless Steel or High Alloy Piping C5.11 Piping Welds > 3/8 in. Nominal Wall Thickness for Piping > NPS 4 in. - Circumferential Welds, and C5.21 Piping Welds > 1/5 in. Nominal Wall Thickness for Piping > NPS 2 in. and < 4 in. Circumferential Weld The welds with coverage limitations have no flaw indications. Several welds do however have ultrasonic geometrical indications caused by ID or OD surface conditions.

2.

Is the integral attachment for component support SI-107-H-022 on the Class 1 (discharge) or Class 2 (suction side) of the pump?

SI-107-H-022 is on the discharge side of the pump. However, it is Class 2.
