San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) 2008 Annual Turtle Incidental Take Report

REFERENCE:

National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Biological Opinion for Sea Turtles Dated 911 8/06

Dear Joe:

In accordance with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) biological opinion on sea turtles dated September 18, 2006, The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) is submitting this annual report on incidental takes of sea turtles for the year 2008. In 2008 SONGS did not entrain any sea turtles. Routine monthly offshore surveys conducted offshore of SONGS in the vicinity of the Units 2 and 3 intakes did not note any sea turtles in the vicinity of the plant intakes. Both plants currently have velocity caps which significantly minimize the potential for the entrainment of sea turtles into the Units 2 and 3 circulating water intakes. SONGS also performs visual inspections of the circulating water intakes every shift for turtles and marine mammals. If you have any questions, please contact me at (949) 368-381 6.

Sincerely, ROBERT HECKLER Environmental Protection Group San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station I) 0.
