SUMMARY

OF TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL HELD ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2008, BETWEEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AND ENTERGY NUCLEAR OPERATIONS, INC., PERTAINING TO THE INDIAN POINT NUCLEAR GENERATING UNIT NOS. 2 AND 3, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION - REACTOR VESSEL NEUTRON EMBRITTLEMENT The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc. (Entergy or the applicant), held a telephone conference call on September 15, 2008, to provide clarification on the staffs earlier request of the applicant to provide the results of the evaluation for the upper shelf region including the nozzles (for 1/4 vessel thickness and inner diameter) for both Indian Point Nuclear Generating Unit Nos. 2 and 3 (IP2 and IP3) (ADAMS Accession Number ML082550574). It is the staffs understanding that the applicant has a reactor vessel fluence calculation for IP2 and is basing its conclusions for IP3 on the IP2 calculation. Therefore, the staff requested that when the applicant provides the requested information, that it include the following information:

1) Indicate if the flux reduction measures are the same for each unit. During the call, the applicant stated that it has not implemented the same flux reduction measures at IP2 as it has at IP3.
2) Provide information or a statement regarding the fuel loading patterns at each unit.

The applicant stated that it would provide the requested information by letter.

The staff also asked for clarification on the vessel geometries relative to the peak fluence.

During the call, the applicant stated that the calculation assumes the axial peak fluence occurs 360 degrees around the vessel (azimuthally).

The enclosure provides a listing of the participants.

The applicant had an opportunity to comment on this summary.
