OF TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL HELD ON JUNE 2, 2008, BETWEEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AND ENTERGY NUCLEAR OPERATIONS, INC., CONCERNING RESPONSE TO AUDIT ITEM RELATED TO THE INDIAN POINT NUCLEAR GENERATING UNIT NOS. 2 AND 3, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATIONBOLTED CONNECTIONS The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc. (Entergy,) held a telephone conference call on June 2, 2008, to inform Entergy of the staffs position on Entergys proposed approach for inspection of non-EQ bolted connections. This matter was the subject of previous telephone conferences (see ADAMS Accession numbers ML080420629 and ML080850050).
In a letter dated March 24, 2008, Entergy clarified its previous response to audit question 63.
The clarified response further explains the types of connections and personnel safety issues of opening energized equipment.
After further evaluation, the staff established a position regarding performance of visual inspections of non-EQ bolted connections. The staff determined that if an applicant proposes to perform only a visual inspection of the bolted connections, then the frequency of visual inspections should be increased.
The Enclosure provides a listing of the participants.
The applicant had an opportunity to comment on this summary.
