Additional information regarding GL 2004-02 Palisades Palisades Nuclear Plant Docket 50-255 License No. DPR-20 Response to Request for Additional Information for Extension of Completion Date for Corrective Actions Required by Generic Letter 2004-02, Potential Impact of Debris Blockage on Emergency Recirculation during Design Basis Accidents at Pressurized-Water Reactors On June 18, 2008, a conference call was held between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc (ENO) regarding ENOs letter, Request for Extension of Completion Date for Corrective Actions Required by Generic Letter [GL] 2004-02, Potential Impact of Debris Blockage on Emergency Recirculation during Design Basis Accidents at PressurizedWater Reactors, dated June 17, 2008. The NRC requested clarification on the completion of actions being proposed to resolve Generic Safety Issue-191. This e-mail provides the requested clarification. This e-mail may be placed on the Palisades Nuclear Plant docket.

Currently, strainer head loss and chemical effects testing is scheduled to be reconvened at Alden Research Laboratory on September 15, 2008. The planned testing will reflect contingency modifications that are being developed in parallel. For example, ENO is considering modifications that include removing fiber (up to 100%), installing debris interceptors, and installing additional strainers. Incorporating modifications into the test parameters for the September testing is expected to avoid the need for future testing iterations and provides assurance that the GSI-191 issue will be addressed no later than restart from the 2009 refueling outage.

Another clarification was requested during the call regarding the replacement of trisodium phosphate as the containment sump buffering agent with sodium tetraborate. This is a permanent modification to the plant. The NRC approved the replacement of the containment sump buffer to sodium tetraborate in Amendment number 227 that was issued on October 2, 2007 (ML07250735).
