VOGTLE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT, UNIT 2 (VOGTLE), REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (RAI) REGARDING THE STEAM GENERATOR TUBE INSPECTION REPORT FOR THE TWELFTH REFUELING OUTAGE, 2R12 (TAC NO. MD7228)
Dear Mr. Tynan:
By letter dated October 12, 2007, Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc. (the licensee),
submitted the spring 2007 steam generator (SG) tube inspection report performed at Vogtle 2 during the twelfth refueling outage (2R12). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff is reviewing the submittal and has determined that additional information is required to complete its evaluation.
The NRC staffs RAI is enclosed. The licensee is required to provide a response to the RAI within 30 days.

Enclosure REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE SPRING 2007 STEAM GENERATOR TUBE INSPECTIONS VOGTLE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT, UNIT 2 DOCKET NO. 50-425 By letter dated October 12, 2007 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML072880102), Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc.,
(the licensee), submitted information summarizing the results of the spring 2007 steam generator (SG) tube inspections at Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, Unit 2 (Vogtle 2). These inspections were performed during the twelfth refueling outage (2R12). In order to complete its review of the documents listed above, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff needs the following additional information:
- 1. For each refueling outage and steam generator tube inspection outage since the steam generators were placed in service, please provide the cumulative effective full power months the steam generator has operated.
- 2. Regarding the scope of examinations in the U-bend region of rows 1 and 2, please confirm that you have examined all of the tubes (in this region) prior to the completion of your current inspection period (presumably the 90 effective full power month period).
- 3. You indicated that the steam generators were chemically cleaned during your 2007 outage. Please discuss the results of the chemical cleaning.
- 4. Please discuss the scope and results of any secondary side inspections.
- 5. Please confirm that the one non-pluggable volumetric indication is the same volumetric indication that was reported in steam generator 2 in row 1 column 46. Please also confirm that the indication was attributed to wear and that the indication is non-pluggable because it did not exceed the tube repair criteria (rather than the tube could not be plugged). In addition, discuss the cause of the wear (e.g., interaction with cleaning equipment, etc.)
