CONCERNS YOU RAISED TO THE NRC REGARDING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A COAL GASIFICATION PLANT
Dear Ms.Pafumi:
This letter is in regard to your telephone conversation with the Headquarters Operation Officer at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on October 08, 2007. During that conversation, you expressed concerns about the pending construction of a coal gasification plant being built in close proximity to the existing James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant and Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station in Oswego, NY. We acknowledge and appreciate your concern in this matter.
There are many requirements for the final approval and construction of this coal gasification plant unrelated to the NRC and our regulations. With respect to NRC regulations, the Code of Federal Regulations requires every nuclear licensed facility (licensee) to periodically update their safety analysis reports as the surrounding industrial environment and population change over time. In this case, if and when this plan to build a coal gasification plant continues forward through the approval process, the licensee will evaluate the potential impact this new facility poses to their plants safety analysis.
The NRC resident staff on site, at both FitzPatrick and Nine Mile Point, will continue to monitor all updates to the licensees safety analysis to ensure the public health and safety in Oswego, NY.
