SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF THE MAY 8, 2007, CATEGORY 2 PUBLIC MEETING RE: IMPLICATIONS OF WOLF CREEK DISSIMILAR METAL WELD INSPECTIONS (TAC NO. MD0694)

On May 8, 2007, a Category 2 public meeting was held between the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and industry representatives at the Bethesda North Marriot Hotel and Conference Center in North Bethesda, MD. A list of attendees is enclosed. The purpose of this meeting was for the industry representatives to present a matrix of potential modeling cases for the Phase II sensitivity, benchmarking, and validation calculations in their Advanced Finite Element Fracture Mechanics Analyses.

The May 8, 2007, meeting was one of a series of public meetings related to the Wolf Creek pressurizer nozzle weld flaws found in October 2006. Other public meetings to discuss this topic were held on November 16, 2006 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML063320131), November 30, 2006 (ADAMS Accession No. ML063560371), December 20, 2006 (ADAMS Accession No. ML070330381),

March 7, 2007 (ADAMS Accession No. ML070740752), and May 1, 2007 (ADAMS Accession No. ML071360367).

The NRC staff opened the meeting by providing a status of the analysis program and an outline of the presentations to follow. The NRC staff made a presentation that provided the results of efforts to date to benchmark and verify the industrys analysis software. The NRC staff analyses provide reasonably similar results to the industrys analyses. The NRC staff also discussed plans for further software benchmarking and verification efforts. A more detailed summary of the NRC staffs presentation is provided in its presentation slides (ADAMS Accession Nos. ML071350651 and ML071350648).

The industry representatives made a presentation discussing proposed resolution of issues raised in the letter from NRC to NEI dated April 4, 2007 (ADAMS Accession No. ML070940186), on analysis methods. This discussion was concluded with agreements to review additional material and continue discussions at a future meeting. Industry

representatives also presented material on weld residual stress validation efforts, a concept for the analysis matrix and sensitivity cases, and leak rate calculations. At the conclusion of the meeting, participants discussed plans for future meetings. The industry representatives presentations are provided in its presentation slides (ADAMS Accession Nos. ML071350646 and ML071350653).

Members of the public were in attendance. No public meeting feedback forms were received.
