Letter from J. A. Spina (CCNPP) to Document Control Desk (NRC), dated January 30, 2007, Inspection and Mitigation of Alloy 600/82/182 Pressurizer Butt Welds This letter provides our response to the Confirmatory Action Letter (CAL) (Reference a) related to the inspection and mitigation of Alloy 600/82/182 Pressurizer Butt Welds. The CAL required Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant (CCNPP) to perform the following actions:
- 1. Notify Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) immediately if our understanding differs from that set forth in the CAL;
- 2.
Notify NRC if for any reason we could not complete the actions and commitments within the specified schedule and advise NRC in writing of our modified schedule in advance of the change; and
- 3.
Notify NRC in writing when we have completed the actions and commitments addressed in the CAL.
The CAL also referenced our letter to the NRC dated January 30, 2007 (Reference b), which included commitments to complete the inspection/mitigation of Unit 2 pressurizer dissimilar metal (DM) butt welds and report the results of these actions to NRC.
The Unit 2 inspection and mitigation of pressurizer DM welds was completed on schedule during the 2007 Unit 2 refueling outage. All required Performance Demonstration Initiative (PDI) ultrasonic test
Document Control Desk May 30, 2007 Page 2 (UT) examinations of pressurizer DM butt welds were completed with no recordable indications. The Mechanical Stress Improvement Process (MSIP) was implemented as planned on these welds.
The attached table provides details of these results by specific weld locations. This notice completes our actions under the requirements of the subject CAL and provides the required notice of results from Alloy 600/82/182 DM butt welds within 60 days of startup from the 2007 Unit 2 refueling outage. Unit 2 returned to service after refueling on April 2, 2007.
