Dear Chairman Klein:
I am writing to support the request of North Carolina State Senator Eleanor Kinnaird for a field hearing to be conducted on March 22, 2007 at 7:00 PM, at the Barn at Fearrington Village, 500 Village Center, off Rt.15-501, Pittsboro, NC regarding the §2.206 petition on the Shearon Harris fire safety compliance filed on September 20, 2006 by NC WARN, Union of Concerned Scientists and the Nuclear Information and Resource Service, Students United for Reasonable Global Environment and NC Fair Share. Our Board of Commissioners is further interested in the expansion of the emergency evacuation zone around the plant beyond the current level.
As you are aware, our board and a number of local governments have endorsed the petition and have expressed interest in a local hearing on these matters. I understand that during the November 13, 2006 meeting with the petitioners, the NRC expressed openness to participating in a local hearing.
The purpose of the field hearing will be to address the questions raised in the petition so that the public and elected officials can hear from the NRC, Progress Energy and the petitioners as to their positions on the issues raised.
Such a hearing will certainly improve the understanding of the public and local officials in the area. I look forward to your earliest reply that a field hearing will be held on the date and time requested. Thank you in advance for your favorable reply.
