3 The question asks the examinee to identify the alignment of the shutdown cooling purification system. The correct answer identifies that purification comes from upstream of the letdown heat exchanger. The distracters that were chosen by 9 of the 15 examinees identifies incorrectly that the purification comes from downstream of the letdown heat exchanger, which is incorrect. The distracter chosen by 6 of those 9 examinees also identified that the flow was controlled by the letdown flow control valves. In the shutdown condition the flow is controlled by the backpressure control valves.

38 This question challenged the examinees to determine the operation of the waste gas system with off normal conditions. The examinees are to answer the questions by knowing setpoints of the waste gas compressors and operational characteristics of the waste gas surge tank pressure control valve. Due to the even spread of the answers by the candidates it is apparent that a fundamental lack of knowledge of system operating characteristics exists.

70 Identification of proper actions is required to stabilize power when a positive iTC exists. In this condition the correct method is to move CEAs to stabilize reactor power. The distractor chosen by 6 of the 15 examinees was to increase steaming to stabilize reactor power from rising. This would be an incorrect action due to the adverse affect on other plant parameters.

79 On a loss of a vital inverter the candidate is tasked with determining the tech spec time limit for return to service. A general feeling by the examinees, 6 of the 7 SROs, was that this type of action would require a 1 hr time limit for return to service of the bus. In actuality the tech specs give 2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
for powering the bus from the alternate power supply which accommodates the time necessary to transfer power supplies but is timely enough for the RTS of such a vital piece of equipment.

96 Administrative question inquiring as to the requirements for 1OCRF50.59 screening pertaining to procedure change which will result in performance NOT in accordance with the UFSAR. Students selected all four options which indicated weakness in this area by all students. The requirement for this situation is to perform satisfactory completion of a 10CFR50.59 evaluation without contacting the NRC. Contacting the NRC is not required for this instance and is stated so in SONGS admin procedures.
