Enclosure OFFICE OF NUCLEAR REACTOR REGULATION REVIEW OF THE STEAM GENERATOR TUBE INSPECTION REPORTS FOR CYCLE 15 CATAWBA NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT 1 DOCKET NO. 50-413 By letters to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated November 28, 2005 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML053410182) and August 30, 2005 (ADAMS Accession No. ML052500494), as supplemented by letter dated May 15, 2006 (ADAMS Accession No. ML061430258), Duke Power Company LLC (the licensee) submitted the Cycle 15 steam generator (SG) tube inservice inspection reports for Catawba Nuclear Station (Catawba) Unit 1, in accordance with Technical Specification (TS) Section 5.6.8, and as required by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, Paragraph IWA-6230, for the SG tube inspections performed during the end of cycle (EOC) 15 refueling outage (May 2005).

Catawba Unit 1 has CFR 80 SGs which are designated SGA through SGD. All four SGs were inspected during the EOC 15 SG tube inservice inspections. The CFR 80 SGs contain approximately 6,633 Alloy 690 tubes which have a 0.688-inch outside diameter and a 0.040-inch wall thickness. The tube support plates are lattice Type 410 Stainless Steel.

The licensee provided the scope, extent, methods, and results of the Catawba Unit 1 SG tube inspections in the documents referenced above. In addition, the licensee described corrective actions (i.e., tube plugging) taken in response to the inspection findings. The licensee confirmed that analyses were performed to ensure that tube integrity would be maintained until the next inspection.

Based on a review of the information provided, the NRC staff concludes that the licensee provided the information required by their TSs. In addition, the NRC staff concludes that there are no technical issues that warrant follow-up action at this time since the inspections appear to be consistent with the objective of detecting potential tube degradation and the inspection results appear to be consistent with industry operating experience at similarly designed and operated units.
