March 30, 2006 Operational Status Indian Point Unit 2 is operating at 100% and has been on line 29 days. Indian Point Unit 3 is operating at 100% reactor power and has been on-line for 177 days.

Update on Groundwater Investigation The following is a summary of recent activities in the groundwater investigation:

  • IP2 Spent Fuel Pool Liner: Entergy has initiated a contract a vendor, a company that specializes in robotic camera inspections, to perform a video inspection of the walls in the spent fuel pool liner adjacent to the fuel racks. They will also assess the feasibility of using robotic cameras to survey the floor of the spent fuel pool. The pool wall inspection is scheduled to start in early June and last about 3 weeks.
  • Monitoring Wells. All of the Phase 2 wells have been installed. Most have also been sampled.

Monitoring wells MW-49 and MW-50 located on either side of the discharge canal in the IPi turbine building have sample results back. Tritium was detected at 10,700 pCi/L in MW-50 on the east side of the canal and at 15,200 pCi/L in MW-49 on the west side of the canal. Analyses for Sr-90 have not been obtained yet. The samples were negative for gamma emitting isotopes.

MW-42, located west of the 1P2 Reactor Water Storage Tank and near the IP1 spent fuel building was tested for tritium and gamma emitting isotopes. Tritium levels at MW-42 were reported at 261,000 pCi/L and Cesium-1 37 at 10,500 pCi/L. Cs-1 37 is a gamma emitting isotope that is characteristic of the IPI spent fuel pool water. These levels of Cs-1 37 are not unexpected in this area since the well is close to the IP1 North Curtain Drains that collect water from the IP1 spent fuel pool, which has a known leak. Indian Point processes water collected in the North Curtain drains through an ion exchanger before the water is released in accordance with state and federal permits. Entergy has also sent samples from MW-42 to a lab for further analysis of beta emitters including Sr-90. The sample from MW-42 was part of a split sample that was shared between the NRC, New York State DEC and Entergy.

Status Report Available on JIC Website The Indian Point status report is now available on the new Joint Information Center web site. The web site is part of the virtual news room concept that is being developed for public emergency information. The web site will also include the latest radiological release information for Indian Point.
