RECEIPT OF AMERGEN RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 2006-03, POTENTIALLY NONCONFORMING HEMYC AND MT FIRE BARRIER CONFIGURATIONS (TAC NO. MD1641)
Dear Mr. Crane:
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) acknowledges receipt of AmerGen Energy Company, LLCs (AmerGen or the licensee) response to Generic Letter (GL) 2006-03 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML053620142), Potentially Nonconforming Hemyc and MT Fire Barrier Configurations. In the response, dated June 6, 2006 (ADAMS Accession No. ML061640343), AmerGen stated that neither Hemyc nor MT fire barrier materials are used at Three Mile Island, Unit 1 (TMI-1).
AmerGen stated that TMI-1 uses fire barriers other than Hemyc or MT. All fire barriers used to separate redundant safe shutdown trains located within the same fire area at TMI-1 are described in the licensees responses to GL 92-08 (ADAMS Accession No. ML031134250),
Thermo-Lag 330-1 Fire Barriers. AmerGens letters dated December 30, 1999, and March 12, 2000 (ADAMS Accession Nos. ML003676460 and ML003693928, respectively), state that TMI-1's corrective actions associated with GL 92-08 have been completed and that these barriers are rated as required by the licensing basis. The basis for stating that these other fire barriers have been designed and installed in accordance with NRC guidance should be maintained on site, and will be subject to inspection during the normal NRC inspection process.
