PdECEi Va AC Russell W. Goyette 7 Strathmere Street Waretown, NJ 08758 February 21, 2006 President George W. Bush The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, DC RE:
A POSITIVE, PRO-ACTIVE PRESIDENT
Dear Mr. President:
Now is a perfect opportunity for you to demonstrate that you are a positive, pro-active president.
Prove that you are not an arbitrary, inflexible person.
Do not approve the continued operation of The 0yster Creek nuclear.power station in New Jersey. You can be a proponent of nuclear energy and still see that this plant should not continue to operate beyond its intended life - to end in 2009 ; for many sound reasons.
This particular plant is simply not as safe-as.asanuclear facility should be. Its design is obsolete -
pre 9/11; it is the oldest nuclear plant in the nation. It is particularly vulnerable to terrorist attack, especially with its spent fuel rods - kept on-site. Its operating track record is dismal. There is no effective evacuation plan.. The plant continues to harm the environment.
Do not rely on the NRC. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is widely perceived as a "rubber stamp," ready to approve every effort to expand the nuclear industry - arbitrarily. Be above it -
you are! Replace-this nuclear plant with another-nuclear-plant - of a better-design, in a better location (more easily defended).
Encourage the NRC to find a permanent depository for spent nuclear waste. On - site storage is unacceptable - too vulnerable.
Don't let this be perceived as a Blue State vs. Red State issue. I urge you to - Step Forward.
P Sincerely, I..;.'
