June 19, 2006 Dr. Graham B. Wallis, Chairman Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555-0001
SUBJECT:
BEAVER VALLEY EXTENDED POWER UPRATE APPLICATION
Dear Dr. Wallis:
I would like to thank you for the comments and insights of the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS or the Committee) on the Beaver Valley Power Station Units 1 and 2 (BVPS 1 and 2) extended power uprate (EPU) application from FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC or the licensee).
On May 4-5, 2006, during the 532nd meeting of the ACRS, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff presented its review of the EPU application for BVPS 1 and 2. The ACRS Subcommittee on Power Uprates also discussed the BVPS 1 and 2 EPU application on April 25-26, 2006. In a letter to Chairman Diaz dated May 22, 2006, the ACRS recommended that the NRC staff approve FENOCs application for the EPU at BVPS 1 and 2. The letter also provided insights on selected review areas. In addition, the ACRS expressed interest in reviewing progress on the industrys generic efforts to satisfy the long-term cooling requirements of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 50.46. The NRC staff will keep you informed of progress on this issue.
The NRC staff appreciates the Committees insights concerning the BVPS 1 and 2 EPU amendment review.
Sincerely,
/RA/
