Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk 1 1555 Rockville Pike Rockville, Maryland 20852 Palisades Nuclear Plant Docket 50-255 License No. DPR-20 Generic Safetv Issue 191 Proiect Update for Palisades Nuclear Plant By letter dated September 13, 2004, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Generic Letter (GL) 2004-02, "Potential Impact of Debris Blockage on Emergency Recirculation During Design Basis Accidents at Pressurized-Water Reactors." In GL 2004-02, the NRC required that the Part 2 response be provided by September 1, 2005. Nuclear Management Company, LLC (NMC) provided the Part 2 response for Palisades Nuclear Plant (PNP) by letter dated August 25, 2005.

In that response, NMC made several references to pursuing an active strainer approach as a resolution path for GSI-191 at PNP. As part of the project review process, NMC performed a comprehensive assessment to determine the most favorable project success path considering available active and passive strainer technologies. The results of the assessment indicated that implementing a passive strainer technology is more likely to result in timely resolution of the issues associated with GSI-191. Based on the above assessment, NMC has suspended active strainer activities and is in the process of procuring a replacement passive strainer technology. The associated regulatory commitments will be reviewed, and an update to the GL will be submitted by July 20, 2006. NMC remains committed to the regulatory deadline of December 31, 2007. Summary of Commitments This letter contains one new commitment and no revisions to existing commitments.

NMC will submit an update to the August 25,2005, GL response by July 20, 2006, for the Palisades Nuclear Plant.
