- Status Feb.2 report February 2, 2006 Operaticonal Status Indian Point Unit 2 is operating at 100% and has been online 42 days.

Indian Point Unit 3 is operating at 100% reactor power and has been on-line for 121 days.

Update on Tritium Investigation BM_40154* Spent fuel pool liner inspection. A coating material has been evaluated and approved for coating/repair to the stainless steel liner in the IP2 spent fuel pool. A video inspection of the liner previously identified six areas where there were potential flaws. Three of these areas have been inspected and vacuum box tested. The remaining three areas on the north and west walls of the spent fuel pool will be tested by divers and all six locations coated.

  • Well installation. The last well in the phase 1 drilling is being installed in the IP2 turbine building.

This well (MW-37) is on the west side of the discharge canal. Three wells in phase 2 are already under construction.

  • Monitoring Well Sample Results. The most recent test results from on-site wells have shown no appreciable change in tritium levels. On January 24, samples were collected from three surface water locations off-site. Sample results obtained from an off-site lab showed levels of tritium that are just at the limit of detection (500 pCi/L). All previous sample results from these locations have shown no detectable tritium activity. These locations are included in the routine environmental sampling program and have not previously indicated activity. Since these test results are inconsistent with previous samples and would not be expected due to the hydrologic model of ground water flow on site, Entergy has collected additional test samples from these locations and has sent them for tritium analysis at two different test labs. These results should be available early next week. It should be noted that these results are about 1/40th of EPA reference drinking water standards I and do not impact any public or private water supplies.

The NRC', New York State DEC, and Entergy will collect split samples from the phase 1 wells and possibly off-site locations next week.

  • Hydrologic model. The current model of ground water flow at Indian Point appears to indicate that water movement on site is heavily influenced by the excavation and construction activities, which occurred when the plants were built in the 1950's-1 970's. Wells installed on the north and south ends of the site show water levels at higher elevations than found in the transformer yard and IP2 spent fuel pool areas.

There appears to be a hydrostatic pressure gradient which would contain ground water on site and create a reservoir effect on site and limit flow of water off-site. The dominant flow pattern on site is toward the discharge canal and the Hudson River.

The phase 2 investigation should help confirm and provide additional detail for these preliminary conclusions.
