2005 April SONGS NRC Written Exam Exam Item Analysis Question #3 50% failure rate This question was found to be technically valid. Two different distractors were selected, which would indicate a generic weakness in this topic area.

Examinees will be provided with remedial training focused on Core Protection Calculators (CPCs).

Question #20 50% failure rate This question was found to be technically valid. Two different distractors were selected, which would indicate a generic weakness in this topic area.

Examinees will be provided with remedial training focused on Pressurizer OPERABILITY and the applicable Technical Specifications.

Question #21 50% failure rate This question was found to be technically valid. One distractor was selected, which could indicate a common mis-conception in this topic area. Examinees will be provided with remedial training focused on instrumentation power supplies.

Question #22 50% failure rate This question was found to be quite difficult, but technically valid. Two different distractors were selected, which would indicate a generic weakness in this topic area. Examinees will be provided with remedial training focused on SGTR mitigation strategy.

Question #32 100% initial failure rate / 0% failure rate after re-grade RE-GRADE: This question was found to have some technical issues, and is being submitted for re-grade. Various references refer to 340°F as the maximum temperature. Refer to the attached documentation for justification for accepting A and B as correct answers. The question will be modified prior to future use.

Question #47 16.67% initial failure rate / 0% failure rate after re-grade RE-GRADE: This question was found to have some technical issues, and is being submitted for re-grade. Under certain conditions an EDG can be considered OPERABLE with starting air pressure as low as 136 psig.

Refer to the attached documentation for justification for accepting A and B as correct answers. The question will be modified prior to future use.

Question #50 50% failure rate This question was found to be technically valid. One distractor was selected, which could indicate a common mis-conception in this topic area. Examinees will be provided with remedial training focused on Emerpencv Diesel Drotection.

2005 April SONGS NRC Written Exam Exam Item Analysis Question #53 83.33% failure rate This question was found to be technically valid, but could have benefited from having a more clearly stated stem. Refer to the attached documentation for further discussion. This confusion led to two different distractors being selected. The question will be modified prior to future use.

Question #54 33.33% initial failure rate / 16.67% failure rate after re-grade RE-GRADE: This question was found to have some technical issues, and is being submitted for re-grade. Containment stay times have not been evaluated for temperatures greater than 140°F. Refer to the attached documentation for justification for accepting A and B as correct answers.

The question will be modified prior to future use.

Question #61 33.33% initial failure rate / 66.67% failure rate after re-grade RE-GRADE: This question was found to have some technical issues, and is being submitted for re-grade. The question refers to Turbine Control vice Turbine Protection. Turbine Control response to elevated turbine speed is different than that of Turbine Protection. This confusion led to one distractor being selected by several candidates. Refer to the attached documentation for justification for accepting A as the correct answer. The question will be modified prior to future use.

Question #65 50% failure rate This question was found to be technically valid. Two different distractors were selected, which would indicate a generic weakness in this topic area.

Examinees will be provided with remedial training focused on the Steam Bypass Control System (SBCS) operation.

Question #72 100%failure rate This question was found to be technically valid, although the explanation of the question in the answer key has one major technical error: The threshold for Ehgh Contamination Areas is 2 150,000 dpm/100cm2 betdgamma. All candidates chose the same distractor, which would indicate a generic weakness in this topic area. Examinees will be provided with remedial training focused on radiation limits and exposure control.

SRO-only Question #84 100% failure rate Although technically accurate, the question would be better stated as having significantly lower leakage, and designated as Pressure Boundary Leakage. This would provide a much more stable plant condition, coupled with a Technical Specifications required shutdown. Refer to the attached for further discussion. Examinees will be provided with remedial training focused on use of 10CFR50.54~.The question will be modified prior to future use.
