U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 11555 Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852 Re:

Proposed Renewal of the Operating :License for Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station VIA FAX AND MAIL

Dear Chairman Diaz:

I am writing to urge you to hold a public hearing on the license renewal for the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in Lacey Township. I strongly support the petition filed by a coalition of public interest groups on the issue of corrosion in a safety critical reactor component.

In addition, I understand that the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has requested a hearing on three other safety issues.

I realize that the NRC has contended that a public hearing is not required, but in light of the concerns of the State and of its citizens, I believe a hearing is essential. We must assure the public that the critical safety protections at hbis reactor are currently effective and will remain so for another 20 years before renewing its license.

The state and its citizens are expressing a single message: the only way to provide the assurance we need is through a public hearing on all of the important issues that have been raised. This would allow all those who are concerned about the potential relicensing to present their arguments in an open forum. I urge you to see that this request is granted.

Please contact Kerri Danskin in my office with any questions you might have or new information which may be useful for us. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely, m

Michael J. Panter Assemblyman, 12* District C\\3
