- Raleigh, North Carolina 27699-1931 Michael F. Easley, Governor Carmen Hooker Odom, Secretary Leah Devlin, DDS, MPH State Health Director December 5, 2005 Mr. Nader Mamish Director, Emergency Preparedness Directorate Mail Stop 06-H2 US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. Mamish:
In follow-up to your November 10, 2005 letter, we are writing to request 3500 one ounce bottles of ThyroShield (Pediatric Potassium Iodide Oral Solution) for stockpiling and distribution within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zones (EPZ) of the four nuclear power plants in or adjacent to North Carolina.
The request for 3500 bottles is based on the following: We calculated the proportion of North Carolina's population age 0 to 10 years old to be 15% based on Year 2002 North Carolina Demographic Data. We then applied that percentage to the most recent nuclear power plant-specific 10-mile EPZ population estimates below and multiplied by two (two doses per individual 0-10 yrs) to determine the total number of doses. We then assumed 30 doses per 1 ounce bottle to arrive at 3500 bottles.
