SUBJECT:

PRAIRIE ISLAND UNIT 1 -

SUMMARY

OF NRCS REVIEW OF STEAM GENERATOR TUBE PRE-SERVICE BASELINE INSPECTION RESULTS FOR THE REPLACEMENT STEAM GENERATORS (TAC NO. MC6261)

Dear Mr. Palmisano:

By letters dated February 22, 2005 (ML050910245) and August 22, 2005 (ML052340676), you submitted information pertaining to the steam generator tube pre-service baseline inspection results for the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant Unit 1 replacement steam generators.

Prairie Island Unit 1 has two Framatome ANP Model 56/19 recirculating steam generators.

There are 4,868 Inconel 690 thermally-treated tubes in each steam generator. The tubes have an outside diameter of 0.750-inch, a wall thickness of 0.043-inch, and are supported by stainless steel tube support plates with quatrefoil shaped holes. The tubes were hydraulically expanded throughout the entire tubesheet depth. All tubes in rows 1 through 9 were stress relieved after bending. You provided the scope, extent, methods and results of the steam generator tube inspections in your letters dated February 22, and August 22, 2005. In addition, you stated that there were no tubes plugged prior to and during the installation of the replacement steam generators.

Based on a review of the information provided, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff concludes that there are no technical issues that warrant follow-up action at this time since the inspections appear to be consistent with the objective of detecting potential tube degradation and the inspection results appear to be consistent with industry operating experience at similarly designed and operated units. If you have any further questions, please contact me at 301-415-8371.

Sincerely,

/RA/
