TWMS Narrow Range Suppression Pool Water Level Instrumentation TR B3.3.6.5 TR B3.3 INSTRUMENTATION TR B3.3.6.5 TWMS Narrow Range Suppression Pool Water Level Instrumentation BASES Torus water level must be maintained between an indicated level of 14 ft, 4 inches (-2 inches indication) and 14 ft, 8 inches (+2 inches indication), in accordance with Technical Specification LCO 3.6.2.2. The most accurate instrumentation for monitoring suppression pool water level is the Torus Water Management System (TWMS) narrow-range suppression pool water level instrumentation. There is only one channel of the TWMS narrow range suppression pool water level instrumentation. It consists of a transmitter (G51-N402), a signal converter (G51-K404), a low/low-low level switch (G51-N408), a high/high-high level switch (G51-N409),
another signal converter (G51-K406), and an indicator (G51-R402 on the main control room panel'H11-P807). The level switches drive alarms with setpoints of +/- 1.5 inches (high/low) and +/- 2.0 inches (high-high/low-low) to alert the operators prior to reaching the TS 3.6.2.2 limits of 14 ft, 4 inches and'14 ft, 8 inches. The G51 instrumentation, with a range of 6 inches, from 14 ft, 3 inches to 14 ft, 9 inches, along with being the most accurate instrument, has the greatest measurement resolution; and thus, is the preferred instrumentation for' monitoring suppression pool water level. This instrumentation is controlled by this LCO and is evaluated in Design Calculation DC-4543.
The HPCI narrow range suppression pool water level instrumentation (E41),
which is controlled in accordance with Technical Specification 3.3.5.1, and evaluated in Design Calculation DC-4534, provides an alternate means for monitoring the suppression pool water level. There are two channels of the HPCI narrow range suppression pool water level instrumentation, consisting of sensors E41-N062B and D, trip units with indication E41-N662B and D, and IPCS indication. The E41 channels have a 20-inch measurement range, from 13 ft, 8 inches to 15 ft, 4 inches, and thus provide a less accurate measurement than the G51 instrumentation.
The Post Accident Monitoring System suppression pool water level instrumentation (T50), which is described and controlled in accordance with Technical Specification 3.3.3.1 and Design Calculation DC-4534 provides another alternate means for monitoring the suppression pool water level. There are two channels of T50 wide range suppression pool water level monitoring instrumentation, consisting of sensors T50-N406A and B, recorders T50-R804A and B, and IPCS indication. The T50 channels have a 200-inch measurement range, from 2 ft, 6 inches to 19 ft, 2 inches, and thus provide an even less accurate measurement than either the G51 or the E41 instrumentation.
The ACTIONS and the SURVEILLANCE REQUIREMENTS listed for TRLCO 3.3.6.5 apply only to the G51 instrumentation, with the exception of the channel check, which compares the G51 instrumentation with the E41 (continued)
TRM Vol. I TRM B3.3.6-5 REV 76 08/05
TWMS Narrow Range Suppression Pool Water Level Instrumentation TR B3.3.6.5 BASES instrumentation. The E41 and the T50 instrumentation are not specified in the LCO; and thus, do not require entry into Condition A when they become inoperable. However, the E41 and the T50 instrumentation may be used to verify that suppression pool water level is within limits, as specified in Required Action A.2, when the G51 instrumentation is inoperable. Technical-Specification 3.3.5.1 provides the ACTIONS and the SURVEILLANCE REQUIREMENTS for the E41 instrumentation, and Technical Specification 3.3.3.1 provides the ACTIONS and the SURVEILLANCE REQUIREMENTS for the T50 instrumentation. TS LCO 3.3.5.1 should be followed for an inoperable E41 instrument, and TS LCO 3.3.3.1 should be followed for an inoperable T50 instrument. TRLCO, 3.3.6.5 should not be construed to apply to the E41 or the T50 instrumentation in any way, other than to be used for channel checks or to verify that suppression pool water level is within limits, as specified in Required Action A.2, when the G51 instrumentation is inoperable.
TRLCO 3.3.6.5 requires the single channel of TWMS (G51) narrow range suppression pool water level instrumentation to be OPERABLE in MODES 1, 2, and 3. Condition A is intended to ensure that appropriate actions are taken if this channel becomes inoperable. The channel is considered OPERABLE if any combination of transmitter (G51-N402), signal converters (G51-K404 and K406), level switches and alarms (G51-N408 and N409),
and/or indicator (G51-R402) function, such that suppression pool level can be ascertained using this instrumentation. If the single TWMS channel becomes inoperable, efforts must be made to restore the channel to OPERABLE status within 7 days, or the suppression pool water level must be determined to be within specification every 12 hours1.388889e-4 days <br />0.00333 hours <br />1.984127e-5 weeks <br />4.566e-6 months <br /> using an alternate means, which may include either or both channels of the E41 narrow range suppression pool water level instrumentation (preferred), or either or both channels of the T50 wide range suppression pool water level instrumentation. Condition B requires immediate performance of an OPERABILITY assessment for Technical Specification LCO 3.6.2.2, Suppression Pool Water Level, if Condition A is not met.
Note that the alarm function of this instrumentation is the actual component being tested in the Channel Functional Test out of convenience.
Failure of the Channel Functional Test constitutes failure to meet the LCO; and thus, requires entry into Condition A. However, if indicator G51-R402 is still available and believed to be reliable through Channel Check or otherwise, it may continue to be used to verify suppression pool water level in accordance with Required Action A.2 until the LCO is once again met.
