Dear Dr. Diaz:
As you know, on Friday, July 22, 2005; Exelon Corporation submitted a renewal application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to extend the operating license of its Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station for an additional twenty years. I write to you requesting the NRC provide a comprehensive and exhaustive review of this application.
If approved by the NRC, the application to relicense Oyster Creek would allow Exelon to continue generating power for an additional twenty years. I have stated my serious concerns regarding the age, security, and ability of the plant's infrastructure to operate for an additional twenty years in previous correspondence. I urge you to personally address the NRC staff conducting this review to ensure they understand the critical nature of the task they are about to undertake.
Unlike other relicensure applications that have been submitted to your agency in the past, the unique circumstances surrounding the Oyster Creek application necessitate a more extensive and complete analysis. I trust you will take every assurance to see to it such steps are taken.
